India needs a leader like this !!

This e-mail was forwarded to me…The copy in bold is by the originator of the e-mail and the rest is from a newspaper report…I am saddened by the fact that educated Indians think like him/her…Has he/she forgotten that India is a secular country and not a Hindu one and that Indian Muslims are not immigrants? But if by chance the originator means that all citizens of this country should abide by its constitution and laws, then I agree with him…SIMI, are you listening?

The views of former Australian Prime Minister

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation’s mosques. Quote: ‘IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.’

‘This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom’

‘We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!’

‘Most Australians believe in God.. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.’

‘We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.’

‘This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, ‘THE RIGHT TO LEAVE’.’

‘If you aren’t happy here then LEAVE. We didn’t force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.’

Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, Indian citizens will find the backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

  1. In the Australian context of things , it makes perfect sense . In Rome , be a Roman . India is a different story . But I partially agree with the tone of the address . There are some issues which need to addressed on that lines . And also , will it be “right” of me to say that India is a secular nation , but with a Hindu core ?

  2. You are right in saying that India is a secular country with a Hindu core but that does not mean that people of other religions should not be allowed to practice their faiths…But as I said, ALL should abide by the constitution and the laws of the land and even if they don’t, they can’t be asked to leave the country as they are citizens…Also, one cannot ask a Muslim, Christian, Sikh or Jew to believe in Hinduism and pray to Hindu gods…

  3. I wish we were in a position to make such a clear-cut distinction. Unfortunately, that is tough for us, given our troubled history.

And how do we define Indian culture? It certainly isn’t only Hindu! Though given the current situation I’ve started hoping it was – and I used to be a proud and fervent believer in our multicultural society before. Anyhow, facts cannot be wished away.

That is not exactly what I had in mind . Please be free to follow any religion you want . But your country should come first . And by acknowledging the fact that India has a Hindu core , I do not imply that non-Hindus should start practicing Hinduism . Just avoid doing things which antagonize Hindus . Cow slaughter for example . I , as an educated person , would NOT stop someone from eating the meat of their choice . But try explaining that to those who are less educated or barely literate . And most importantly , UNIFORM CIVIL CODE . When somebody immigrates to a country , say , like Australia , they do know that will have to abide by Australian rules , which are the same for everyone . Why can’t we have that here ?

  5. @Kislay
I totally agree with you about the UNIFORM CIVIL CODE but I think it will remain a dream as politicians esp. the Congress don’t want to antagonize their Muslim vote bank…Politics is all wrong in this country – it’s not about doing good but power and money…

  6. @Bones,

I also believe that we need a uniform “Civil Code”. Incidentally I heard that it is the BJP which is the only party pushing for this.
Only when we do that can we claim that we are secular.
